When is it safe to resume or begin a yoga practice after the birth of my baby? The recommended time to resume a practice is six weeks following delivery. However, if your baby’s delivery was by C-Section, your recovery time will most likely be longer. It’s always a good idea to get approval from your physician or midwife prior to beginning/resuming a practice. No experience is necessary to participate in this class. What can I expect in a Postnatal class? You can look forward to an outing with your baby and meeting other new Moms and their babies. Each class contains a component devoted to strengthening and toning the abdominal muscles and a restorative component. As the weeks ensue students will explore the Classical Yoga postures and enjoy a balanced asana practice of: standing work, backbends, forward bends, twists, and inversions. And yes, sometimes babies fuss, but usually not for very long. The babies enjoy an atmosphere of soft lighting and relaxing music, as do the Moms. Because the babies in this class range from 6 weeks to 5 months, the asanas are directed more towards the Moms than the babies. There are books that specifically focus on postures that may be practiced with baby. A recent publication is called, “Yoga Mom and Buddha Baby.” “I loved going to my Prenatal Yoga class each week, because the aches and pains of pregnancy were so much less noticeable after a good stretch. The relaxation was also wonderful - I didn't realize that being pregnant could be a stressful experience, and the class really helped me to release that stress. The Postnatal Yoga class helped me to regain my core strength - something that I really needed after having a Cesaerean Section. Sappho is great with the babies, and I think that my son actually finds the atmosphere as calming as I do.” - Laura Chutny
